Expert Moving Tips for a Smooth Move

After helping thousands of families and businesses move throughout Santa Barbara County, we've learned that the smoothest moves aren't necessarily the easiest—they're the best prepared.

Over the years we've seen just about everything imaginable, from forgotten wedding rings tucked inside dresser drawers to customers who accidentally packed the television remote in a box labeled "Christmas Decorations." Fortunately, we've also learned the little tricks that make moving day far less stressful.

Here are a few of our favorite tips:

Pack one room at a time. It keeps boxes organized and makes unpacking much easier.

Label every box on multiple sides. Include both the room and a brief description of what's inside.

Create an essentials box. Pack medications, chargers, toiletries, snacks, coffee supplies, pet items, and a change of clothes so you're not searching through boxes your first night.

Don't make boxes too heavy. Small boxes are best for books, while larger boxes should be reserved for lighter items like bedding and pillows.

Take photos before disconnecting electronics. Reconnecting televisions, routers, and entertainment systems becomes much easier.

Declutter before you pack. Moving is the perfect opportunity to donate, recycle, or dispose of items you no longer need. Fewer belongings mean less to pack, less to move, and often lower moving costs.
