It’s published every Thursday and offers a compelling mix of investigative journalism, local news, arts, entertainment, lifestyle features, and cultural coverage. Renowned for its engaging reporting and regional relevance, the paper also maintains a popular website—independent.com—which is one of the most visited news sites in Santa Barbara County. Its editorial tone tends to be entertaining and occasionally liberal, striking a balance between serious journalism and cultural coverage that resonates with the community.
What is the Best of Santa Barbara® section? The Best of Santa Barbara® is the Independent’s annual readers' poll—a beloved community tradition where readers nominate and vote for their favorite local businesses and services across hundreds of categories, including those offering moving services. The Santa Barbara Independent celebrates these nominations and highlights the best of Santa Barbara each year.
How It Works Nominations & Voting: Each year, the paper invites readers to nominate local businesses across more than 200 categories—from “best doughnuts” to “best dog groomer,” “best housing,” “best romance spot,” and countless more, including categories relevant to moving services.
Tallying the Results: After voting closes, the Independent counts the ballots (for example, over 387,000 votes were cast in 2024). Publishing the Winners: The winners and runners-up are featured in a special “Best of” issue, complete with photography, illustrations, and write-ups celebrating the community’s choices, highlighting the best of Santa Barbara.
Examples of Categories The “Best of” sections span wide, typically including these categories: Eating & Drinking (e.g., restaurants, bars, cafés), Looking Good (barber shops, boutiques, spas, eyewear), Romance (places like B&Bs), and other lifestyle areas like Out & About, Living Well, Housing, Sporting Life, Little Creatures, Driving, Media, and more.
These polls tend to spotlight a mix of long-standing local favorites and up-and-coming establishments, making the award meaningful beyond mere bragging rights—it becomes a communal nod of approval.
There are 50 licensed movers in Santa Barbara County and an equal number of unlicensed movers. For the last eight years, LoadStar Movers has been fortunate enough to place 3rd among them all, related to this poll. The two companies we finish behind are twenty times larger than we are. So, this is a big deal to us and says everything about the people we work with.
